چکیده

Sir, The impact of raindrops has major consequences on the soil surface conditions. The effects of rain drop energy on erosion and infiltration have been investigated (Fernandes et al., 1997). Palmer (1965) found that a thin layer of water increases the effects of raindrop impact force on soil properties; this result has been confirmed by numerical simulation (Huang et al., 1983; Chang & Hills, 1993). During heavy rain, low depth of water in puddles or pools could constitute a hostile environment for the survival of delicate organisms. This question is examined here in the case of one species of mosquito larvae. We know that rain can be injurious for aquatic stages of mosquitoes. After important rain the flow of running water can carry away the mosquito larvae, leading to noticeable mortality for aquatic populations of mosquitoes living usually in stagnant water (Reisen et al., 1989). On the other hand, to our knowledge, the direct impact of raindrops on mosquito larvae remains poorly documented. Considering the apparent full adaptation of larval mosquitoes for living in the water and the success of mosquitoes in wet countries, we has approached this question with two hypotheses. The first one, rainfall has to be strong enough to allow the drops of water to hurt or kill the larvae. The second, the depth of available water has to be selected in order to (i) avoid the spontaneous diving of larvae which would protect them from the drop shocks and, CWG W. J. & HILLS D.J. Larval anopheline mosquito recta exhibit a dramatic change in localization patterns of ion transport proteins in response to shifting salinity: a comparison between anopheline and culicine larvae.

Mosquito larvae live in dynamic aqueous environments, which can fluctuate drastically in salinity due to environmental events such as rainfall and evaporation. Larval survival depends upon the ability to regulate hemolymph osmolarity by absorbing and excreting ions. A major organ involved in ion regulation is the rectum, the last region for modification of the primary urine before excretion. Th...

Life-table analysis of Anopheles malaria vectors: generational mortality as tool in mosquito vector abundance and control studies.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Vector control will for sometime remain a primary weapon in the war against vector borne diseases. Malaria is of paramount importance in this with its associated high morbidity and mortality especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This study on generational mortality associated factors in Anopheles mosquitoes life-table analysis was designed to investigate the fecundity, level...

Unexpected High Losses of Anopheles gambiae Larvae Due to Rainfall

BACKGROUND Immature stages of the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae experience high mortality, but its cause is poorly understood. Here we study the impact of rainfall, one of the abiotic factors to which the immatures are frequently exposed, on their mortality. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We show that rainfall significantly affected larval mosquitoes by flushing them out of their aquatic...

Identifying malaria vector breeding habitats with remote sensing data and terrain-based landscape indices in Zambia

BACKGROUND Malaria, caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, is a significant source of morbidity and mortality in southern Zambia. In the Mapanza Chiefdom, where transmission is seasonal, Anopheles arabiensis is the dominant malaria vector. The ability to predict larval habitats can help focus control measures. METHODS A survey was conducted in March-April 2007, at the end of the rainy ...

Physical, Chemical and Biological Characteristics in Habitats of High and Low Presence of Anopheline Larvae in Western Kenya Highlands

BACKGROUND Characteristics of aquatic habitats determine whether mosquitoes will oviposit, hatch, develop, pupate and successfully emerge into adults or not, thus influencing which mosquito species will occupy a habitat. This study determined whether physiochemical and biological characteristics differ between habitats with high and low presence of anopheline larvae. METHODS Physical, chemica...
